Catholic journalist Peter Jennings, who has strong family links with Norway, has sent us this appeal for prayers and messages of support for the country and its people, after it was hit by two deadly terrorist attacks yesterday. Peter writes:

The people of Norway are reeling in shock and need to know that Christians and people of other religious faiths throughout the world are praying for them in a special way at this tragic time.

The first attack, and without any warning being given, was a massive car bomb which exploded near to the Norwegian Parliament Building in Oslo, the capital. At least seven people were killed - murdered - and many more injured.

Several buildings were damaged and many windows of the government block that houses the Prime Minister's office were blown out.

The second attack took place on Utoya Island about 50 miles to the north of Oslo. According to the Norwegian police, a Norwegian man dressed as a policeman opened fire with an automatic weapon, murdering, more than 25 people.

The carefully planned attack took place at the ruling Labour Party Youth Camp attended by more than 600 young people - the political leaders of tomorrow.

Norway, the land of the 'Midnight Sun' is a very beautiful country. Stella, my wife, and I, returned from a most enjoyable two week holiday in Norway on Monday evening, 18 July. We stayed with our 28-year old daughter Sarah and her Norwegian fiancée Børge in Ørland, near Trondheim.

Please email comments and messages of prayer support and ask your friends to do the same. I will send a selection to Sarah and Børge in Norway.
