Season of Creation celebrated in 46 countries
The Season of Creation ended last week. Marisa Vertrees, Organizing Director of the Global Catholic Climate Movement has written to all the participants to thank them for making in such a success. She writes: "This year, we had over 500 events in 46 different countries. This is nearly 200 more events than we had last year, so it is so encouraging to see this Season growing and the work being done around the world."
Some additional highlights:
• 124 events, one quarter of the total, were led by GCCM Animators
• 336 (67%) of the events were Catholic-led, organized by either Catholic organizations or by lay Catholics
• The 500+ events brought Catholics and Christians together across the globe, including a rally against fracking in Great Britain, bringing the Laudato Si' message to 1.5 million pilgrims in Argentina, blessing a solar farm in a coal community in the United States, and Cardinal Taglle presiding at a Mass in Manila with 5000 attendees. For more information, you can see and share this beautiful wrap-up video, or look at our blog for some of the event highlights.
• GCCM facilitated a joint fossil fuel divestment announcement by 40 Catholic institutions, the largest divestment announcement yet. It received media attention from the Guardian, Reuters, and many others.
• Church leaders discussed Season of Creation in the media, including a joint statement by Pope Francis and Patriarch Bartholomew.
Marisa writes: "Thank you to everyone who participated in these events and the work of all of your networks! We look forward to Season of Creation continuing to grow."
Approximately 1.5 million pilgrims travel through Luján, Argentina, each year. The Global Catholic Climate Movement shared the message of Laudato Si', Pope Francis' groundbreaking enyclical on climate change and ecology, with them and encouraged them to take the Laudato Si' Pledge.
