Chiltern Catenians support St Joseph & The Helpers Charity

Catenian Jim Fitzpatrick chose St Joseph & The Helpers as his President's charity for 2015/16. As a result of a number of initiatives, the brothers of Chiltern Circle raised more than £4,300. Jim is pictured here presenting the cheque to the Charity's Chairman, Pat Henry. The Charity was established in 2004 by Pat's brother Arthur McCluskey and its prime objective is to give help and assistance to the inhabitants of Bosnia Herzegovina who have been devastated by the 1992-1995 conflicts in Yugoslavia.

Arthur was a very successful businessman who owned a string of racehorses and enjoyed living the high life, but he was brought low by his addiction to drink and gambling from which he was saved by a visit to Medjugorje in the year 1999. It was during this visit that Arthur turned back to God and found a new goal - no longer was he going to make money for himself but he would abandon gambling and put all his energy into helping the people of Bosnia Herzegovina to rebuild their lives after the devastation of the Bosnian war.

As a result of Arthur's efforts the charity has raised more than £3 million which has been used to build, refurbish and equip schools and churches, to provide accommodation for orphans and homeless families, to assist with the education of young people, to provide prosthetic limbs to amputees and for many other worthwhile projects.

Arthur died in 2011, but his spirit lives on in the work of the charity which is run on a zero cost basis. The directors make no charge for their services; they pay all the charity's expenses from their own resources and use their homes as offices. This means that 100% of every donation is devoted to helping people in need.

The money raised by Chiltern Circle is being used to provide a new prosthetic leg for Edina Sinanovic, the 39-year-old mother of three young children, who lost a leg at the age of 16 when she stepped on a landmine and to sponsor the education of two young children until they are old enough to attend a state school.

Online donations can be made at the charity's website: www.helperscharity.com
