Film on life of Pope underway

An Italian production crew has begun filming a TV movie on the life and times of Pope John Paul II.

The film, shot in Poland, is an adaptation of a historical account by Italian writer Gian Franco Svidercoschi. Named 'Karol, The Story of a Man Who Became Pope', the film will be completed by spring 2005, and will be televised in two 90-minute segments on Italian television. It may later be exported overseas.

According to director Giacomo Battiato, the first part of the film is set during World War II, while the second part is set in post-War Poland. Some scenes will be shot at the Vatican.

Piotr Adamczyk, a 32-year-old actor, is playing the Pope.
