A group of CAFOD supporters took the Pope's message on climate change to the heart of government this week, when they handed in a petition signed by 40,000 Catholics calling on David Cameron to show leadership at the UN climate talks.

The petition, which is part of a global campaign supported by over half a million Catholics worldwide, is inspired by Pope Francis' call in Laudato Si' to care for the Earth, our common home, and to protect all those suffering from extreme weather exacerbated by climate change.

The group of campaigners (pictured above) took the petition to Number 10 Downing Street just days before world leaders meet at the UN talks to negotiate a binding global deal to reduce carbon emissions and tackle climate change. The 40,000 signatures represent Catholics from every diocese in England and Wales.

The petition is part of CAFOD's One Climate, One World campaign, which calls on world leaders to stop climate change pushing people deeper into poverty and to support the transition from fossil fuels to sustainable energy for all.

It's part of a wider petition that will be handed to Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, by members of the Global Catholic Climate Movement, who are travelling to Paris for the UN talks to be the voice of the 600,000 faithful supporting the campaign.

Climate change, caused by the burning of fossil fuels, intensifies extreme weather events such as droughts and floods, driving people in the least developed countries deeper into poverty. Pope Francis has spoken out about the devastating effects of climate change, and the need for action, in his recent encyclical, Laudato Si'.

Sarah Hagger-Holt, Campaigns Engagement Manager at CAFOD, said: "Pope Francis' encyclical is having enormous influence all over the world, inspiring Catholics and others to take action and call on their politicians to tackle climate change and poverty.

"From the heart of the government in the UK to world leaders at the UN, the passion and compassion of the faithful is reaching those who can change the policies that make a difference to people living in poverty."
