Cuban Cardinal Jaime Ortega, Special Envoy of Pope Francis at the Fifth National Eucharistic Congress in El Salvador, asked for the canonization of Mgr Oscar Romero on Sunday.

"We ask the Lord the honour of the altars for him ", said the Archbishop of Havana in his homily during the celebration held at a sports complex in Santa Tecla in the presence of thousands of faithful.

The Eucharist celebrated on Sunday, August 11, marked the end of the fifth National Eucharistic Congress. It was also the conclusion of the Centenary of the Archdiocese of San Salvador, and of the Dioceses of Santa Ana and San Miguel.

Archbishop of Tegucigalpa, Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez, local bishops and other Central American countries; dozens of priests and seminarians and thousands of lay faithful attended the celebration. When the name of Mgr Romero was mentioned there were cries of joy and enthusiasm from the crowd.
