Catholic Church protests over welfare cuts
CSAN (Caritas Social Action Network), the social action arm of the Catholic Church in England and Wales has labelled the announcement of a further £10 billion cut to the welfare budget as "far too much, far too soon."
Speaking from the Conservative Party Conference shortly after George Osborne and William Hague laid out the plans, Helen O'Brien Chief Executive of CSAN (Caritas Social Action Network) stated: "the provisions of the Welfare Reform Act have not even been fully implemented, but already the government is announcing a deeper and more arbitrary set of cuts that will inevitably fall upon the poorest families."
The concerns echo Archbishop Vincent Nichols' warning at a CSAN event last year that cuts are "already being felt disproportionally by the most vulnerable”.
