A contact in Rome writes:
The trouble is that it is absolutely a closed shop and nepotism is rife. A Jesuit friend of mine was blocked time and again for trying to find the 'best price' for things that needed doing around the house. One clear example was that the llift kept breaking down and a workman was called in, at considerable expense, each time. My friend then discovered that someone was actually switching off the lift and that all he needed to do was to switch it back on. Bills plummeted as the contractor didn't need to come again!
This person said it would be difficult to change, adding:
I was shocked when I discovered, for instance, that an accountant whom I saw daily and was always very friendly was also a leading member of the Camorra!
