Australia Day honour for Sydney Port Chaplain
Today, on Australia Day, it was announced that Sister Mary Leahy has been awarded an Order of Australia Medal for services as an Apostleship of the Sea port chaplain. A member of the Sisters of St Joseph, Sr Mary has worked in the port of Sydney for many years.
In 2010, the Sydney Seafarers' Centre where Sr Mary serves, won the top award for seafarers' welfare at the 15th Lloyd's List DCN Shipping and Maritime Industry Awards.
She explained at that time: "Our Centre is unique in that three welfare providers, the ITF, Flying Angel run by the Anglican Church, and the Apostleship of the Sea run by the Catholic Church, all work together at the grassroots level. We present a new model of holistic welfare… caring for body and soul !!" Sr Mary said that she has always been supported by the Union and they respect her care for all seamen regardless of their religion. Congratulations Sr Mary!
