Bishop John Rawsthorne, Bishop of Hallam, has been invited by Pope Benedict XVI to participate in next month's Special Assembly for Africa of the Synod of Bishops.

The theme is: 'The Church in Africa, at the Service of Reconciliation, Justice and Peace: 'You Are the Salt of the Earth ... You Are the Light of the World.'

Bishop Rawsthorne said: "Reconciliation, justice and peace are vital for Africa, "The Church in Africa is in a position to be very influential in bringing these aims forward. It will be a privilege to be present and I'm sure great lessons will be learned "

The Special Assembly will be held in the Vatican between 4 - 25 October 2009.

Bishop Rawsthorne is Chair of CAFOD's Board of Trustees.

This is the second Special Assembly for Africa. The first was assembled by Pope John Paul II in 1994.

Earlier this year, Pope Benedict XVI released an Instrumentum Laboris - a working document for the Synod.
