New mosaic at Westminster cathedral
The feast day of St Alban is being celebrated in a special way at Westminster cathedral this afternoon, with the unveiling of a new mosaic depicting the saint, near St George's chapel. The Byzantine-style design by sculptor Christopher Hobbs, was commissioned by Judge Michael Coombe, in memory of his late wife. Standing seven feet tall, and three feet wide, the saint is shown with a halo, in priest's vestments with a cross around his neck. The Latin name ALBANVS is featured underneath. Christopher Hobbs said the image was meant to be symbolic, an object of contemplation rather than a piece of decorative art. He said he drew his inspiration from many different sources, including his work in article restoration. He was assisted in the project by Tessa Hunkin, from the Mosaic Workshop.
