New archbishop for Boston
Bishop Sean Patrick O'Malley was named by the Vatican yesterday as the new archbishop of Boston. Bishop O'Malley, 59, succeeds Cardinal Bernard Law, who resigned amid public outrage in December amid accusations that he covered up paedophilia by Roman Catholic priests in his diocese. The new archbishop established tough new procedures for preventing abuse in his two previous posts - in Fall River, Massachusetts and the Palm Beach diocese where two previous bishops were implicated in sex scandals.
