First Augustinian priest ordained in Kenya

Source: Misna

The Augustinians of the Assumption society in Kenya has ordained its first priest.

Deacon Simon Njuguna was ordained into priesthood by the Nairobi Auxiliary Bishop David Kamau at Saint Monica Catholic Church, Njiru near the Kenyan capital on Sunday.

The newly ordained priest hails from Murang'a Diocese in the country's Central Province.

He will now become vocations director for the East African region.

In his homily, Auxiliary Bishop Kamau said more than ever before, priesthood was being faced with several challenges from the forces of globalization. He added that the family remained a key factor in formation to religious life as well as priesthood. He reiterated the need for priests to collaborate with Christians at all levels to fulfill the evangelizing mission of the Church. While he regretted the shortage of priests, he said urged the priests not to relegate their priestly services to the catechists unnecessarily.

Father Simon is the second Assumptionist in the East African region. Father Calistus Makoi from Tanzania, was ordained last year.
