Faith Matters: Exclusive interview with Popes' favourite designer

They've done it again. Student reporters at St John Bosco College in Battersea, south London, have just produced another fascinating edition of Faith Matters - this time leading with an exclusive interview by Alexandre Marques with Filippo Sorcinelli, the artist and fashionista responsible for designing the Popes' liturgical vestments. Steeped in fashion and theology, he describes how 'every detail takes on an amplified symbolic value'.

There's a delicious summer recipe from Nikki, before a feature in which student Danas Radavicius, asks three Jewish, Muslim and Christian women the same series of very thoughtful questions about their faith - looking at the similarities and differences - questioning what we can learn from each other and how we can draw closer together.

Doug Wells offers a very knowledgable and heartfelt commentary on the different Requiem Masses through the ages. He reflects of Mozart, Verdi and Faure through to Stravinski, Matthew Coleridge and composer in residence at the Benedict XVI Institute for Sacred Music Frank la Rocca's Mass, composed in 2024 commemorating the murder of a Ukrainian priest by the Bolsheviks in 1941. Doug points out how suited this piece is for 'the many thousands in Gaza, Ukraine Lebanon and Iran - and so many other countries in our troubled world..'

Dean Yela gives a history of the shrine of Walsingham - from its origins in 1061 through to its destruction in the Reformation to its rebirth now as the one of the most important spiritual centres in the country for Christians - whether Catholics, Anglican or Orthodox. Eva Shelton also presents an interview the manager of the Little Walsingham Gallery.

Published under the guidance of editor-in-chief Fr Andrew, the whole magazine is beautifully designed and very well-written - altogether a very interesting read. I hope some the Faith Matters reporters write for ICN one day.
