London: Flying the Flag of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

On Friday 12 June 2026, a group of Christians will process from St Mary Magdalen's Catholic Church, Wandsworth East Hill, London, SW18 2QU, to and around Wandsworth Town Hall, which is a short walk from the Church.

The Procession will begin after the 7pm Mass at St Mary Magdalen's Catholic Church. Canon Martin Edwards, the parish priest, will bless the Flag during the Mass and, during the Procession, will dedicate Wandsworth Borough to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

A large banner of the Sacred Heart of Jesus will be carried to and around the Town Hall. The Procession will also include readings from Scripture, singing of hymns and prayers. We will conclude the Procession with the prayer below.

The Group is encouraging devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Christian tradition of marking the month of June as the month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and flying the Sacred Heart flag goes back over 400 years.

Jesus appeared to Sister Margaret Mary Alacoque, a French Visitation nun and mystic who lived 1647-1690. Jesus appeared to her and showed her His heart and instructed her to promote devotional practices. The symbol of the burning Sacred Heart of Jesus depicted on the Sacred Heart flag represents the burning love Jesus has for every person.
