Acting smart with your smart phone

Two Sixth Year students from Clongowes Wood College SJ, Ollie Worth and Leon Zang Patje, write:

On 9 January 2007, Steve Jobs, the then CEO of Apple Inc., introduced the first iPhone at Macworld. It went on sale six months later on 29 June. To date, Apple has sold over three billion iPhones since the first model was launched in 2007.

On Friday 9 January 2026, the phones 19th anniversary, two students at Clongowes Wood College SJ led the school in a reflection on the role of the smart phone in their lives. "Phones aren't bad - they're tools," they said, before adding, "The real question is: do we control them, or do they control us?… How is this small device shaping me?"
