Rev John M Paul SJ, Rector of the Tantur Ecumenical Institute in Jerusalem will be speaking at Farm Street Church from 7-8pm on Thursday 16 October, on The Voice of Christians in the Holy Land: A Catalyst for Hope & Reconciliation. During the evening, hosted by Friends of the Holy Land, he will share first-hand insights on the current situation and the growing ecumenical voice of Christians in the Holy Land as a powerful catalyst for hope and reconciliation. Building upon this theme he will outline how, although the Christian communities represent only two per cent of the population, the depth of their presence and pastoral outreach can counter rising polarisation in the region in unprecedented ways and challenge - How can Christians in the UK support this voice?
'Fr JP' as he is known is a member of the Midwest Province of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). He was ordained in 1980 and has a Masters of Sacred Theology from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California as well as a Masters of Fine Arts in Theatre from The Catholic University in Washington DC. Among his many roles prior to coming to Tantur eight years ago, he has ministered with Native peoples on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota working as teacher, superior, president, and superintendent of schools at Red Cloud Indian School, a community that have faced similar historical challenges to the Palestinian community. In a recent phone call, he advised " I'm growing more excited about this visit as we speak and look forward to sharing some small signs of HOPE I have experienced".
Following this special discussion and Q&A there will be a simple reception. For those unable to attend in person, the event will be livestreamed.
