'Make Them Pay' Interfaith Vigil and Mobilisation

Source: CAFOD
Faith for the Climate and Quakers in Britain have organised an interfaith vigil before the Make Them Pay mobilisation in London on Saturday 20 September. All faiths and beliefs are welcome for prayers, reflections, and silent contemplation from 11.30am at Cavendish Square Gardens, before assembling for the demonstration at 12pm, Portland Place.
The demands of the mobilisation are:
- New taxes for the extremely wealthy - a call to tax the super-rich and use this money to fund the services for all.
- A just transition for all - creating decent, well-paid, unionised jobs for everyone in every community, and supporting the renewable industries of the future, rather than preserving extreme wealth for a few at the top.
- Make polluters pay for their damage - half the world's emissions come from a handful of fossil fuel companies. Polluting corporations across a host of sectors have known about the danger of fuelling climate change and have knowingly destroyed nature. They must foot the bill for cleaning up the mess they've created.
The interfaith vigil will have speakers from different faith traditions, and the demonstration afterwards will be police-liaised, legal and family-friendly.
Speakers at a rally in Whitehall at 2.30pm include Revd Helen Burnett, a climate activist and an Anglican parish priest.
