Sr Katrina Alton, Pax Christi National Chaplain writes:

'Today, a United Nations Commission of Inquiry has formally concluded that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza. "It is clear there is an intent to destroy the Palestinians in Gaza through acts that meet the criteria set for on the Genocide Convention." The criteria include, mass killings, infliction of serious mental or physical harm, destructive living conditions, and prevention of births.

Today we also hear that the Israeli Defence Forces have launched a new intensive "ground offensive" into Gaza City. This really means more mass killings, the blocking of humanitarian aid, and forced displacement.

In the face of genocide we cannot remain silent, we cannot be complicit. We must raise our voices, and use all nonviolent means possible to bring true peace in Palestine - peace built on the foundations of justice for all people. So, we as Pax Christi, alongside all people of good will, now call for urgent action:

- An immediate ceasefire to halt the ground offensive, bombings, blockade, the use of all force and violence, and the release of all hostages and political prisoners.

- Full access for humanitarian aid-food, water, medical care-unimpeded by military or political constraints.Accountability through international law for those found responsible for genocide and crimes against humanity. Silence or complicity are forbidden under both divine justice and international law.

- For the UK Government to immediately and unequivocally halt all arms deals with and the transfers and sales of arms to Israel

We call on churches everywhere to break their silence, confront complicity, and stand boldly with our sisters and brothers in Palestine.

Together we can turn the tide of warmongering and genocide. Together we can challenge the myth of redemptive violence, show that another world is possible, and, 'Let justice flow like a river...'
