Play: The Dedication
This psychological drama, written by Claire Novello and directed by Kenneth Michaels,(Secretary of the Catholic Association of Performing Arts - CaAPA) is set in Vienna around 1902 - 1910. Alma is torn between the famous composer Gustav Mahler and younger less celebrated composer Alexander von Zemlinsky. She knows that when she marries Mahler he has forbidden her to compose. Directed by Kenneth Michaels (Secretary of the Catholic Association of Performing Arts). Sixty years after Alma Mahler's death, this play still resonates today.
Jewish-born Mahler converted to Catholicism before taking charge of the Vienna Opera in 1897 at the age of 37. His decision was probably a pragmatic one - to protect himself from anti-Semitism which was rife in Austria at the time. But he was also very familiar with Christian culture, music and literature and much of his work is permeated with Christian subjects and themes.
