As the Paris Olympics get closer, pupils at a Coventry school have delivered a trophy-laden end to the season after impressing with their maths and athletics skills.

Pupils at Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School, part of the Romero Catholic Academy, came out on top in the Coventry Catholic Schools Athletics meeting at the University of Warwick, beating 18 other city primary schools.

A group of 15 pupils took part in the event, impressing across track and field to win gold overall, with pupils from Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School helping to marshal the events.

The result came off the back of being crowned county champions in small school indoor athletics at the School Games, which was held at North Solihull Sports Centre and saw schools competing from all over Solihull, Coventry and Warwickshire.

A trio of pupils went on to achieve Gold in the National Junior Maths Challenge, which tests the mathematics skills of youngsters across the country, with Year 6 pupil Yufan posting the best score in the whole of the Romero Catholic Academy, which includes seven primary and one secondary school in Coventry.

Andy McConville, principal at Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School, said: "We have some really talented pupils and while it's brilliant to see our children succeeding, the message is all about taking part and enjoying the challenge.

"It's been wonderful to end the year with these sporting and academic achievements but also lots of extracurricular activities happening right across the school, including our annual overnight camping experience for our Year 3 pupils.

"We are extremely proud of everyone who took part in these events and are excited to see what we can achieve next year!"
