Canon Richard Sewell is the Dean of St George's College in Jerusalem. On 15 May, he reported on twitter from Amman, Jordan, where the annual synod of the Anglican Diocese of Jerusalem is meeting. In attendance were clergy and church representatives from Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. He described an online presentation from the Director of an Anglican-managed hospital in Gaza.
At our synod meeting in Amman we heard an incredibly moving testimony from Suheila Tarazi, Director of our Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza City. She summarised the traumatic experience of these past eight months. What she is doing with the remaining staff is nothing short of a miracle.
Suheila said the daily greeting between staff now is not "good morning" but "thank God for your safety". Two missiles had hit since last October, one destroyed a ward and another caused mass killing in the car park, "but we assured the Archbishop that we would continue, and we did".
Through tears Suheila said she is determined that Al Ahli will remain a symbol of resilience and of Christ's love in Gaza. She believes that the sun will shine again to bring justice to the suffering people. We are overwhelmed with gratitude for her strength and of all staff.
