The 'O' Antiphons - for Gaza: O Adonai
18th December - O Adonai
O Adonai, and leader of the House of Israel,
who appeared to Moses in the fire of the burning bush,
and gave him the law on Sinai:
Come and redeem us with an outstretched arm.
For Gaza
What words can we use
to utter Your name,
O Holy One beyond all things?
Master?
Lord who has sovereignty over us?
These are inadequate
Always somebody will be disturbed by what they mean
Or convey.
Yet, still our thoughts,
calm our inquisitiveness.
At this moment, O Adonai,
Ancient Loving One,
who is the true Law,
the fire in the burning bush
that does not consume or destroy,
destroy not us, but consume our sin in forgiveness.
O Adonai, the leader we really yearn for
but know not.
Come to us
reach across the barriers
we religions of the `Book
set up against each other.
Shake us into reality,
to know that You alone are One,
You alone are the Most High,
and it is to you
we owe the true obedience of our hearts.
O Adonai,
before you we take off our shoes
in reverence and true loving fear.
