Birmingham: Newman University celebrates NSS success

Newman University in Birmingham is celebrating after its students were among the most positive in the city and the West Midlands about their university experiences, according to the National Student Survey (NSS), published this morning.

The NSS is organised by the Office for Students and gathers students' opinions on the quality of their courses to help inform prospective students' choices, provide data to help universities improve the student experience and support public accountability. Every university in the UK takes part in the annual survey, which enjoys consistently high response rates.

Newman students highlighted the quality of teaching and the university culture, which allows students to explore ideas and concepts in depth thanks to smaller class sizes, as key to pushing them to achieve their best at the university. Similarly, Newman scored highly for providing opportunities for students to bring together information and ideas from different topics - a reflection of its approach that encourages multi-disciplinary study and the creation of a genuine learning community.

Professor Peter Childs, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Newman University, said: "The results of the 2023 NSS demonstrate how students are at the heart of the Newman experience. These have been challenging years for students in Higher Education but at Newman the personal touch has been key to supporting students through difficult times and inspiring them to achieve their best."

Overall satisfaction levels at Newman were above the sector average in 96% of questions asked, with students particularly praising the university for feeding back on work in a timely manner (11 percentage points higher than sector average), feeling their views and opinions were valued (12 percentage points higher than sector average) and that their feedback was acted on (19 percentage points higher than sector average). Several courses including Primary Education (3-7), Applied Humanities, Early Childhood Education and Care, Psychology, History and Business Management, enjoyed 100% satisfaction ratings in a range of areas.

Newman's library was also highlighted as a real asset, with a 95% student satisfaction rating - the highest in Birmingham for the sixth year running. Chris Porter, Director of Library and Learning Services said: "At Newman's Library we are proud of the contribution we make to our students' success. We are delighted to see how much they appreciate the great services and support we deliver here."

Newman's Students' Union was also ranked best in Birmingham for the fifth year in a row.

Newman University offers foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in subjects ranging from teaching and education to business management, criminology and law. It is now open for Clearing 2023 and will host an Open Day at its Bartley Green, Birmingham Campus on Saturday 19 August, between 10am and 3pm.
