Pope Francis prayed for peace and consecrated the Church and the world to the Blessed Virgin Mary during his visit to Fatima on Saturday morning 5 August. Following the recitation of the Rosary the Pope's twitter account @Pontifex tweeted a prayer: "To you, we consecrate the Church and the world, especially those countries at war."

Pope Francis' Rosary in Fatima was shared in person with 200,000 people, many of them attending World Youth Day, as well as countless others praying with him on live TV and social media.

After the Rosary, Matteo Bruni, the Director of the Holy See Press Office, explained to reporters that during that "long moment of silence" in the Chapel of the Apparitions, as he sat before Our Lady, "the Pope prayed, with sorrow, for peace."
