Church Action for Tax Justice

  • Bryn Louder

"Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can." John Wesley

As a Methodist, last Sunday I took part in my local congregation's annual covenant service. The Covenant is an opportunity to remind ourselves of the promises of God, to accept God's gracious offer of relationship and to be challenged and inspired anew by God's calling over our lives. The service offers individuals time to reflect on where they have perhaps strayed away from God's calling, to acknowledge the times they have evaded their responsibilities and failed to be good stewards of God's creation. It's a challenging service, as Wesley intended. It's thought that Wesley wanted the service to be a means of helping individuals to hear God's offer and challenge ever more deeply, and to allow God to prompt and enable them to respond.

In this season of new beginnings, Wesley's challenge still remains, whether we identify as Methodist or not. It is indeed our prayer at Church Action for Tax Justice and the wider JustMoney Movement, that each of us would hear deeper God's call to seek and establish justice (Isaiah 1:17).

We enter 2023 resolute in our commitment to see money, whether in our purses, pockets, taxes or tithes, used in a way that establishes justice and serves the common good. We invite you to join us this new year as we seek to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with our God (Micah 6:8).

Here are a number of ways to join in in 2023:

Tax Justice Sunday (11th June) - We are really excited to be working alongside our friends at the Fair Tax Foundation to run Tax Justice Sunday again this year. Tax Justice Sunday is a brilliant opportunity to bring the issue of tax justice to your local congregation or gathering. Please get in touch with us if you're interested in getting involved, we'd love to chat about how we can best support and enable you and your congregation. And watch out for resources coming to our website soon...

Wealth Tax Campaign - We continue to campaign for a new UK wealth tax to tackle spiralling inequality. In 2022 we saw over 200 MPs contacted and over 2000 individuals sign our letter to the Chancellor. We'll be doing a final push for the Chancellor's letter in the next couple of months before introducing some new campaign actions, and again would love to hear from you about how we can support you and your congregation to join the campaign.

Praying Together - We want 2023 to be a year of prayer at the JustMoney Movement, so we'll be hosting a number of open prayer gatherings on Zoom throughout the year. We invite you to join us, with our next meeting held on Tuesday 18 April.
