Families will suffer after Spring Budget warns Catholic Union

Following the Chancellor's Spring Statement, the Catholic Union has issued the statement below:

Nigel Parker, Director of the Catholic Union, said: "The increased cost of living is hitting family budgets hard - especially those that were just about managing. While some of the changes announced by the Chancellor will take the edge off spiralling food prices and bills, many people won't feel the benefits on account of inflation.

"Sadly, the Chancellor has once again missed the opportunity to make the tax system fairer for families. The changes to National Insurance and Income Tax do nothing to address the structural problems with our tax system. We need to get rid of the penalty on single earner households once and for all.

"With the two-child cap still in place and child benefits going up less than inflation, many larger families will really feel the pinch. Extra funding for the Household Support Fund is welcome however, and we strongly encourage local councils to work with faith groups in making sure that this reaches people most in need."
