Desmond Tutu International Peace Lecture

Four of the world's ethical leaders are to deliver the 11th Desmond Tutu International Peace Lecture, on Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu's 90th birthday this evening, Wednesday, 7 October 2021 at 7pm. Join us and hear inspirational addresses from South Africa's former public protector, Thuli Madonsela; women's and children's rights activist Graça Machel; chair of The Elders Mary Robinson; and the Dalai Lama, Tibet's highest spiritual leader.

Thuli Madonsela holds the Law Trust Chair in Social Justice at the University of Stellenbosch. She founded the Thuma Foundation, a social enterprise focused on democracy, leadership and literacy. Madonsela has been a lifelong activist for social justice, constitutionalism, human rights, good governance and the rule of law, and is one of the drafters of South Africa's Constitution.

Graça Machel is an African stateswoman whose decades-long public life is rooted in Mozambique's struggle for self-rule, and international advocacy for women's and children's rights. Machel works through several regional and international development bodies to accelerate social transformation. She is a founding member and deputy chair of The Elders.

The first woman to be elected president of Ireland, Mary Robinson is a globally recognised voice on climate change, and a passionate advocate for gender equality and for women's participation in peace building, human dignity and climate justice. Robinson is chair of The Elders and a former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

His Holiness, the Dalai Lama was awarded the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent struggle for the liberation of Tibet. He has consistently advocated for policies of non-violence, even in the face of extreme aggression. He also became the first Nobel Laureate to be recognised for his concern for global environmental problems.

In addition to this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear these leaders speak, there will also be a video of the Archbishop and the Dalai Lama discussing how to find joy amid tragedy in Mission Joy: Finding Happiness in Troubled Times, a film that celebrates their spiritual leadership and decades-long friendship.

The event will be online-only, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. See registration details and trailer below.
