CARJ welcomes government promise to implement latest Windrush recommendations

The Catholic Association for Racial Justice (CARJ) has released the following statement:

The Windrush Lessons Learned Review led by Wendy Williams was published on 30 March 2020 with 30 recommendations. The Home Secretary, Priti Patel, has accepted all 30 recommendations and promised to implement them. This announcement by the Home Secretary is very welcome.

The Government has also established a Windrush Working Group, co-chaired by the Home Secretary and Bishop Derek Webley of the New Testament Church of God. The Working Group will bring together stakeholders, community leaders and government officials.

In a separate but related development, Baroness Doreen Lawrence has written to the Prime Minister to ask about implementation of the recommendations in the Public Health England Report on the impact of Covid 19 on BAME groups.

These developments come after David Lammy MP made an impassioned call for the Government to implement the 35 recommendations of his Criminal Justice Review as well as the 110 recommendations in the Angiolini Review into deaths in police custody, and the 26 recommendations in Baroness McGregor-Smith's Review of workplace discrimination.

CARJ agrees with David Lammy MP, that the time for implementation of these Reviews is long overdue.

CARJ welcomes the first steps by the Home Secretary mentioned above, and we will be working with others to hold the Government to account. In addition to implementing the recommendations of these five Reviews, it will be important that the process of implementation is monitored carefully and evaluated after an appropriate period.
