Pope Francis has appointed Argentinian Fr Augusto Zampini, as adjunct secretary in the Dicastery for the Promotion of Integral Human Development. He is currently working as Director of Development and Faith at the Dicastery - which deals with economics and finance, labour and social movements, indigenous people, peace and new technologies. Fr Augusto served as one of the advisors to the Synod of the Amazon last year. In his new job he will be a close collaborator to the Dicastery Prefect, Cardinal Peter Turkson.

Fr Augusto Zampini-Davies, born in Buenos Aires in 1969, was ordained in 2004. Before entering the seminary he studied law and worked as a lawyer for four years. After his ordination, Fr Augusto served as an assistant priest and chaplain in different parishes and institutions in Argentina, many in some of the poorest neighbourhoods of Greater Buenos Aires.

Trained as a moral theologian, Fr Augusto is now an Honorary Fellow at Durham University, Roehampton University, and Stellenbosh University. He holds a Masters in Wellbeing and Human Development (University of Bath, 2009-10), a PhD in Theology (Roehampton University, London' 2010-2014), and has been a post-doctoral research fellow at Margaret Beaufort Institute, University of Cambridge (2013- 2014).

Fr Augusto lectures on theology, Christian ethics and human rights. His area of research is social ethics and he has conducted research on environmental ethics in the light of the Catholic tradition. Fr Augusto has also been a contributor to mainstream and Catholic media on matters relating to Pope Francis, Catholic Social Teaching, and social Catholicism more generally.

During his time in England, most recently, besides his academic work, Fr Augusto served at Holy Apostles, Pimlico in the Archdiocese of Westminster. He was also a theological advisor to CAFOD and worked with Cardinal Vincent Nichols on environment issues in particular the launch of Pope Francis encyclical on the environment Laudato Si'. He spoke at the Flame youth conference in Wembley. Recently he addressed the National Justice and Peace Network meeting in Bristol and gave presentations to CAFOD's Young Leaders and the Faith in Action Young volunteers' programmes.

CAFOD director Christine Allen said: "At CAFOD, we are delighted to hear the news of Fr Augusto's appointment as 'adjunct secretary for the Dicastery - for the promotion of Integral Human Development.' He played a vital role in supporting CAFOD both here in the UK and in our overseas programmes, to bring to life our response to Pope Francis's call to action in 'Laudato Si - Cry of the earth and cry of the poor.' As we face the urgent challenges of the global spread of COVID-19, we know that Fr Augusto will continue to voice the pressing concerns of communities in the world's poorest countries. We wish him all the best in his work."

On hearing the news of his appointment, Fr Augusto tweeted: "Honoured and happy to serve @Pontifex and the Church, with all my limitations, of course."
