Christmas can be an especially lonely time for seafarers around the world. While most people on the land have a chance to spend some time celebrating with family and friends, for those at sea, Christmas is just another working day. Crews on large container ships are often away from home for up to a year at a time, separated from their families and loved ones. Stella Maris (Apostleship of the Sea) is the leading charity which provides practical and pastoral care to all seafarers, regardless of their faith or nationality. Stella Maris port chaplains and volunteers work in 334 ports in 59 countries. At Christmas time they make sure that all crews in port receive extra treats and presents and have a chance to attend Mass if they wish.
