USA: Seven Catholics on trial for protest at Trident submarine base
The trial begins today of seven Catholic peace activists in the United States. The Kings Bay Plowshares Seven face 25 years in prison for entering and nonviolently and symbolically disarming the US Trident nuclear submarine base at Kings Bay, Georgia in April 2018 on the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jnr. The seven are: Clare Grady, Patrick O'Neill, Liz McAlister, Steve Kelly SJ, Martha Hennessy, Mark Colville and Carmen Trotta.
They were all initially imprisoned. Mark Colville, Steve Kelly and Elizabeth McAlister refused the bail conditions and have been in Glynn county detention centre since April 2018.
PeaceNews held a solidarity vigil today outside the American Embassy in London and were joined by Pat Gaffney, former Director of Pax Christi.
