Kentish Town volunteer celebration
Volunteers from SanKTus - Our Lady Help of Christians parish welfare projects, in Kentish Town, north London, gathered for a celebration meal on Friday.
The team cooks and serves a three course hot lunch - with vegetarian option, coffees, teas and cold drinks - for up to 50 guests each Sunday afternoon. Besides the meal, there's also Sunday papers, showers and clean clothes on offer - and time for people to chat and catch up.
The project has expanded considerably since it began in 1992. Richard Mallon, welfare co ordinator, now works with SanKTus, organising events and offering advice and support for people who are homeless. In wintertime, the parish joins with other churches in the area to host a cold weather night shelter. Guests are given advice and support to get into permanent accommodation.
During the week SanKTus hosts a number of activities for pensioners including an exercise class and lunch club.
The project receives funding from the Irish government and Lottery Fund.
