FCJ sisters give up puddings to transform lives overseas

A group of compassionate Sisters from the FCJ convent at Kersal Hill are raising money for CAFOD's Lent Appeal by holding a weekly simple soup lunch and giving up their puddings.

As well as enjoying a selection of simple, homemade soups - including leek and potato and celery - the Sisters have the option to record when they decide to give up their puddings, donating the money saved to CAFOD.

The money they raise this Lent will help to transform lives overseas: teaching communities new farming skills, and providing hardy seeds which will grow despite droughts.

Sr Loretta Madigan, reflecting on her order's longstanding support of CAFOD, said: "I worked with CAFOD for nine years and became aware of its great outreach, and what it was doing in the developing world. This led to my interest in campaigning and I have been involved in some of CAFOD's lobbies in London!

"What stands out for me is the move away from doing things for people. CAFOD works in partnership with people, empowering them and teaching them new skills."

To them, Sr Jo Grainger added: "CAFOD is a part of life."

CAFOD's local representative in the Salford Diocese, Ann Wilson, said: "It is humbling to see the kindness of the FCJ sisters, who have rallied together to help our global neighbours. CAFOD is widely supported by the order, and their support this Lent is a lifeline for women, men and children all over the world. Thank you so much for your compassion."

Climate change is the single biggest threat to reducing poverty. Whether it is floods destroying homes or unpredictable seasons leading to failed harvests, climate change is undoing years of our work together to improve people's lives.
