Australia: Cardinal Pell convicted on five charges of 'historical child sexual offenses'
Australian Cardinal George Pell has been convicted on five charges of 'historical child sexual offenses' that go back several decades. A 12-member jury gave their unanimous verdict in the County Court of the State of Victoria in Melbourne on Tuesday, 11 December. He is also facing another trial on a separate charge next year.
Presiding judge Peter Kidd issued a suppression order forbidding any media in Australia from reporting on the case.
Judge Kidd decided that the sentencing will take place in early February 2019 and released the cardinal on bail.
Cardinal Pell has denied all the allegations, and is expected to appeal.
Last week Australian archbishop Peter Wilson who had been convicted of covering up child abuse and was serving a 12 month home detention sentence had his case overturned by an appeal court.
