India: Camillians rush medical aid to flood zones

Source: Fides

Violent rains have devastated the states of north-eastern India and the southern state of Kerala: water has flooded roads and highways, causing power cuts and making the affected areas almost unattainable. It is estimated that at least 1,064 villages in 21 districts have ended up underwater, with houses swept away by the torrential rains of the monsoon period, while about 650,000 people are internally displaced, left without anything.

In response, the Camillian Task Force (CTF) of India, together with sisters of various congregations and volunteers of Caritas India, moved from Bangalore to the state of Assam bringing medicines of all kinds and first aid material. They have organised medical camps in the districts of Karimganj, Hailakand and Cachar.

"Last July 1, in the village of Craig Park in the district of Cachar, 117 people were welcomed by the medical team. Most of them were women and children", Father Emmanuel Zongo, from the Camillian Disaster Service International Foundation (CADIS), told Fides.

"The Northeast region, one of the most densely populated parts of the country, has again found itself submerged in water after the breaking of the banks of numerous streams following torrential rains", said Zongo. "Faced with the precarious situation of displaced persons, Caritas India and CTF India, after visiting the communities, evaluated and identified the most urgent needs of 26 villages, created a team of specialists to accompany 35 medical camps in the districts of Karimganj and Hailakandi from 28 June to 8 July. The team is made up of Camillian religious, nuns of different congregations and lay volunteers, a sign of a united and outgoing church," he concluded.
