Pope Francis went to the Roman Basilica of Saint Mary Major on Sunday morning, to pay homage to the icon of the Virgin Mary, Salus populi Romani, after his trip to Myanmar and Bangladesh. The Holy Father, who laid white flowers at the image, returned to the Vatican last night, after having landed at Rome's Fiumicino airport at 9.40pm.

In a tweet before leaving Bangladesh, the Holy Father said: "Dear friends of Myanmar and Bangladesh thank you for your welcome! Upon you I invoke the divine blessings of harmony and peace."
