New York: Events to mark Hiroshima and Nagasaki

On Sunday, August 7th, 2016, Pax Christi Metro New York, a regional chapter of the international Catholic peace movement, will commemorate the 71st anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki with a memorial prayer; presentation by Emilie McGlone, Director of Peace Boat US; and silent procession and vigil.

Ms McGlone directs Peace Boat US, a civil society, non-profit organization working to promote peace, sustainable development and respect for the environment through educational programs that connect people across borders and create opportunities for learning, activism and cooperation around the world in partnership with the NGO Peace Boat. Peace Boat carries out its main activities through a chartered passenger ship that travels the world on peace voyages. Global issues addressed on these voyages include war, environmental degradation, and gender violence. Participants experience grassroots peace-building efforts to find nonviolent, creative, and constructive solutions, from local communities to global advocacy networks.

Following Ms McGlone's presentation about this most creative and unique peace-building initiative there will be time for discussion before we proceed outside for our silent procession to Fr Demo Square and a brief solemn vigil.

This Memorial begins in Casserly Hall below St Joseph's Greenwich Village Church on Washington Place just off Sixth Avenue, one block north of West 4th Street, Sunday, August 7th starting at 2.30pm. The Memorial will end at 4.30pm at the Square.

Because of the prayerful nature of the procession, we ask participants not to bring any signs or banners. There will be an opportunity for a free-will offering.
