Oxford conference: Money speaks - but does it speak truthfully?

In an age of credit default swaps, quantitative easing and computerised trading, whatvalue does money have? What does it mean? Can it in any way tell the truth? Join the Las Casas Institute for a day conference that seeks to unpick contemporary questions in the light of Catholic social teaching.

The Las Casas Institute has assembled a distinguished set of theologians, economists, and other experts to discuss what the lens of money reveals and conceals about our world. This conference on Truth Telling & Money will take place at the University of Oxford's Saïd Business School on 9 July 2016.
The theological virtues of faith, hope and charity will guide the discussion.

Key speakers are:

• Philip Goodchild is Professor of Religion and Philosophy at the University of Nottingham. He will discuss the relationship of faith and money. Author of Capitalism and Religion: The Price of Piety (2002) and Theology of Money (2007), Philip is currently working on a book on credit and faith.

• Sr Margaret Atkins OSA is an Augustinian canoness from the community at Boarbank Hall in Cumbria. She will address the significance of money in the context of hope. Sr Margaret is a Research Fellow at Blackfriars Hall (Oxford) and author of Catholics and Our Common Home.

• Sr Helen Alford OP is Ordinary Professor of Economics and Ethics at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum). She brings her experience in the manufacturing industry to her discussion of money and charity. Her most recent book in English, edited with Francesco Compagnoni, is Preaching Justice: Dominican Contributions to Social Ethics in the Twentieth Century; she is currently working on a companion volume, Preaching Justice II, on the work of Dominican sisters in social and economic spheres.

Initial responses to these addresses and further comments will be offered by a panel of seasoned practitioners:

• Barbara Ridpath is Director of St Paul's Institute, which examines moral and ethical aspects of finance and economics. Barbara has worked in finance for most of her career, in New York, London and Paris.

• Charles Wookey is CEO of Blueprint for Better Business, an independent charitable trust that exists to challenge businesses to serve the society in which they seek to prosper and to support them becoming a force for good. Charles Wookey qualified as a Chartered Accountant and previously worked as a senior research officer at the Institute for Fiscal Studies and as a Clerk at the House of Commons where he was Clerk to the Trade and Industry select committee.

• Peter Róna is a Research Fellow at Blackfriars Hall and a former member of the Supervisory Board of the National Bank of Hungary (2010-2014). Peter has had a distinguished career in finance and commerce, and has published a number of academic articles in economics.

The conference is the third event in a series celebrating the 800th anniversary of the founding of the Dominican Order, whose motto is 'Truth'. The series of lectures and conferences address the challenges of truth telling in contemporary society. (Video from the previous events in the series is available on YouTube).
