CSAN responds to report on destitution in UK
Commenting on a new report published today by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation called 'Destitution in the UK', Philip McCarthy, Chief Executive of Catholic charity, CSAN (Caritas Social Action Network) said: "The finding that over 1,250,000 people experienced destitution last year highlights that more needs to be done to protect the poorest and most vulnerable in our communities.
"CSAN charities have had to diversify their services to respond to the needs of families who have struggled to meet the cost of food, utilities and household essentials. Our charities, including Nugent Care in Liverpool, increasingly provide furniture and funds for electricity and gas key meters, alongside emergency food provision.
"However, demand is outstripping supply and without a concerted effort by civil society, the government and local authorities, many more families will slip through the net."
