Modern Day Epiphany

  • Elizabeth Corley

Now the scraps are all that's left
For lucky dog and compost bin.
Cellar and fridge are both bereft,
Save for an inch of sherry and gin.

In olden days the feasting lasted

Long beyond the Equinox.
But now December's scarce departed
Than we're told we should detox.

"I was given a necklace of gold,
Though I would have preferred a car."
"My perfume's frankincense, I'm told."
"I got a massage with myrrh at the spa."

Tinsel removed on New Year's Day
And back behind the attic door.
"Thank God it's over," people say.
Who recalls what Christmas is for?
