London: Argentinian bishop to give CAFOD’s 2014 Pope Paul VI lecture
The Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, is to deliver CAFOD’s Pope Paul VI lecture this year.
Based in Rome as head of the Vatican’s scientific academy, Bishop Sanchez is an Argentine Catholic Bishop who has published numerous scientific papers. In his address to the annual lecture, which this year will be chaired by ITV News at Ten anchorwoman Julie Etchingham, Bishop Sanchez will consider the themes of climate change and poverty, and the challenge facing the world of how to deliver sustainable development that promotes social inclusion.
The lecture will take place on Friday 7 November at The Greenwood Theatre, King’s College, London, from 7pm. Tickets for the lecture are free, although must be booked in advance, either online at www.cafod.org.uk/lecture or by calling 020 7095 5684.
The lecture follows the recent launch of ‘One World, One Climate’, CAFOD’s major new campaign on climate change. In recognition of the devastating impact climate change is having on people living in poverty, CAFOD’s campaign is calling for political action to secure an ambitious global deal on cutting carbon emissions, and for political leaders to support a transition from polluting fossil fuels to reliable, sustainable energy sources for people living in extreme poverty.
