Sea Sunday Mass at Portsmouth Cathedral

Sea Sunday was marked in style in Portsmouth with the customary Annual Naval Mass. Over five hundred participated with many serving and ex service personnel in attendance at a packed St John’s Cathedral. The Naval Mass was celebrated by Bishop Richard Moth, Bishop of Her Majesty's Forces who was joined by local clergy and the Royal Navy Chaplains.

At the beginning of the ceremony the Cathedral Dean, Canon Dominic Golding, in recognition of the very strong links between Portsmouth and the Royal Navy and especially with the community of St John's Cathedral, the immediate next door neighbour to the Naval Base, was appointed an Officiating Chaplain to the Military. Officiating Chaplains are civilian clergy who support commissioned service chaplains. Canon Dominic’s duties as an Officiating Chaplain will be to support Naval Base Chaplaincy in Portsmouth in relation to further spiritual and pastoral care of Catholic personnel and families in that area, a work he already is naturally involved in as priest of the Cathedral parish. In critical emergencies his local knowledge, connections and support with wider community will be invaluable.

Both Royal Navy and Royal Marines personnel were represented in the colourful festive liturgy. Prayers were offered for all away from home on operational duty, for the Royal Marines celebrating their 350th anniversary and for the work of Apostleship of the Sea.

Afterwards the Sea Sunday celebrations continued with a capacity crowd at the reception in the Cathedral Discovery Centre where Canon Dominic’s new appointment and that historic bond between St John’s Cathedral and the Royal Navy was toasted in traditional style by Mgr Andrew McFadden, the Royal Navy's Principal Chaplain.
