Bishop to the Forces at D-Day Commemorations
Bishop Richard Moth, Bishop of the Forces, was present for the commemorative events marking the 70th anniversary of the D-Day Landings. Bishop Moth accompanied veterans at Bayeux and Ouistreham. In reflecting on the day, he said:
“The commemoration of the D-Day Landings was a truly historic and very moving event. To see so many veterans making great efforts to be there was an inspiration to everyone and the reception they received by the townspeople of Bayeux showed how much their commitment, and the sacrifice of those who gave their lives on D-Day, are recognised and appreciated.
It was also a great day for all those currently-serving Forces Personnel . The care they showed to the veterans and the assistance they gave to all who gathered for the commemorations was exemplary.
It was a privilege for me to be able to speak with veterans and their family members who came to support them. They showed courage once again in going to Normandy, carrying with them painful and difficult memories.
Such events are a reminder to us of the sacrifice and loss of life for so many people from all the nations involved in conflict and of the responsibility we all have to pray and work for peace”.
