London: Lecture to launch Dr Martin Poulsom's 'The dialectics of creation’

This Wednesday, 19 March at Heythrop College, Martin Poulsom will be launching his first book with a lecture entitled ‘Common ground and fault lines: The dialectics of creation’. The book is an adapted version of his doctoral thesis, and is a creative comparison of the accounts of creation given by Edward Schillebeeckx and David Burrell.

Poulsom’s treatment focuses on an often infamous aspect of the doctrine of creation, the ‘ontological distinction’. He shows that the accounts of this that are sometimes given, accusing Christianity of separating God off from the world, rendering him cold, distant and uncaring, are based on a misunderstanding of the distinction, which is only ontological in character between the world and God. Once this misunderstanding has been overcome, and the relation between God and the world understood in a way that is more compatible with tradition, the stage is set for a deeper analysis of the two accounts of ‘the distinction’, which pull in slightly different directions.

If you would like to hear more about why Poulsom has chosen the approach of Schillebeeckx as a way forward, you are most welcome to come to the launch. Simply send an email to Fiona Ellis, the Director of the Centre for the Philosophy of Religion at Heythrop (f.ellis@heythrop.ac.uk) to let her know. There will be a wine reception to follow the lecture, and a possibility to purchase the book.
