Brazil: government gives safety assurances to WYD organisers

Local police forces will be working with police from around the world to guarantee the safety of World Youth Day (WYD) Rio2013, the State Security Secretary of Rio de Janeiro José Mariano Beltrame said last Monday.

Police forces have already started collaborative training. “We expect a very good event. I can tell people who come to Rio de Janeiro we will have the best World Youth Day possible.” said Beltrame after a meeting of the World Youth Day Local Organizing Committee with the Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro and President of COL, Orani João Tempesta.

Beltrame said: “We have an agreement with the Spanish police, we have an agreement with the French police, the Federal Police is also preparing several courses, and our civilian and military police are taking courses here in the Police Academy for this event."

Beltrame and Archbishop Orani discussed security plans in light of the demonstrations which have swept through Brazil in recent weeks.

“Concern has increased a bit more, no doubt,” said Archbishop Orani, but he added that he thought the arrival of Pope Francis and the message of peace WYD brings would have a pacifying influence.

Faced with the demonstrations, Beltrame recognized that the demand for security has increased, but said there is no possibility of WYD being canceled and pilgrims will depart from Rio de Janeiro with a different image of the city.
