Those who work with schools and youth will be interested to see Justice and Peace resources produced by the Commission for the Promotion of Justice, Peace and Social Responsibility in Shrewsbury Diocese. Many of the materials have been written by Anne O’Connor of the Commission.
Despite the controversial decision of the diocese to dispense with its Justice and Peace Fieldworker in May 2012 – after 22 years of service – the Commission is continuing its mission.
Its members say: “Everyone has agreed it is vital to maintain a strong J&P presence in the diocese and that CAFOD and the Catholic Social Action Network, alone cannot cover the full remit of the Gospels and Catholic Social Teaching. Without J&P who would speak up for the voiceless, for human rights, for arms control, for care of the environment?” Producing resources for groups and schools is part of the commitment of dedicated lay people to keep the Commission active.
The Commission’s latest newsletter is at: http://jpshrewsbury.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/shrewsbury-diocese-jpsr-e-bulletin-june-2013.pdf
It carries a report that half a million people in the UK now rely on foodbanks, and highlights Pope Francis’ recent denunciation of a ‘culture of waste’ in an increasingly consumerist world.
