New York: Pax Christi Metro celebrates 30 years of peacemaking

With 2013 marking Pax Christi Metro New York’s 30th year of peacemaking, PCMNY is very proud to announce this year’s honorees and to celebrate not only their accomplishments but also what they stand for. This year’s Peacemakers are exceptional in their commitment to victims of crime, poverty, and war and their resolve to offer compassionate alternatives inspired by their faith.
On Sunday, 19 May, Pax Christi Metro New York (PCMNY) will be paying tribute to Sr Janet Kinney, CSJ; David L.Maloof; and Judy Lewis.
Sister Janet Kinney is Executive Director of Providence House, which was founded by her religious congregation, the Sisters of St Joseph of Brentwood, in 1979. There she helps homeless, abused, and formerly incarcerated women and their children with programs that offer transitional and permanent housing, as well as a variety of social services in Brooklyn, Queens, and Westchester.
David L Maloof is a graduating senior from Fairfield Preparatory High School who first visited the Dbayeh Refugee Camp in Beirut, Lebanon in 2008. There he was moved by the harsh conditions in which Christian-Palestinian families were living. Upon his return home, he was inspired to raise money for sports equipment for the camp’s children. This simple gesture further inspired the Italian Embassy to provide a full basketball court. David returned to the Camp in 2012 to coach the refugee children in basketball. But David is not idle in between trips to Lebanon. He also shares his gifts with local inner-city children as a wrestling coach.
Judy Lewis has been a member of PCMNY’s Board and Development Committee for fewer than three years, but already her dedication, creative energy, generous gift of time, and deep faith have had a very positive impact on PCMNY’s health and growth. Judy has offered new ideas, hands-on work, and the encouragement of others to bring vision and hope to our work for peace.
The awards ceremony will take place in Casserly Hall below St. Joseph’s Greenwich Village Church, Washington Place just off Sixth Avenue, on Sunday, 19 May between 3 and 6pm.
There will be delicious refreshments, beautiful music, and numerous prizes.
