London: Cardinal Cormac to speak on Blessed John XXIII in Lent Talk series

Throughout Lent, St Paul the Apostle Church, Wood Green, in north London will be hosting a series of talks exploring the lives of leading Catholics. The talks will be given by experts in their field, including Bishop Alan Hopes, speaking about Blessed John Paul II, Julian Filochowski, discussing Archbishop Oscar Romero, and Fr Stephen Wang speaking on Dorothy Day.

The talks are free and all are invited, they take place on Wednesday evenings, at 7.30pm beginning tomorrow, 20 February, with Cardinal Cormac Murphy O’Connor speaking on the life of Blessed John XXIII.From humble beginnings he became a pope of great personal holiness, marked by reforming zeal and a reconciler between ancient enemies.

Further dates:

Wednesday 27 February – Julian Filochowski on Archbishop Oscar Romero. A Central American Archbishop martyred in 1980 for his tireless defence of the poor from oppression

Wednesday 6 March – Fr Stephen Wang will speak on Dorothy Day. An American journalist, social activist and devout Catholic, she worked to defend the rights of the poor and against all forms of violence.


Wednesday 13 March – Fr Gary Walsh on Blessed Teresa of Calcutta. Founder of the Missionaries of Charity, she worked for over 45 years ministering to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying.


Wednesday 20 March – Bishop Alan Hopes on Blessed Pope John Paul II. A philosopher and pastor, resisting communist oppression who became a holy Pope who helped defeat communism externally to the church and restored much unity within the Church.
