Colorado: churches rush aid to fire victims

Catholic churches in the Archdiocese of Denver have joined Bishop James D Conley, apostolic administrator of the Archdiocese, in a call for both prayer and charitable assistance towards victims of the multiple fires raging throughout the state of Colorado. More than 35,000 people have now been homeless by the inferno.

Catholic Charities are working with other churches and local agencies to support victims of fires in many areas including Larimer County, High Park, Waldo Canyon and Boulder County. Together with other agencies they are monitoring the fires and giving shelter, food, clothing and other support to many hundreds of people. Church and school halls are being turned into temporary dormitories and dining rooms.

A statement from the diocesan charity said: "Our ongoing response to these unfortunate natural disasters remains rooted in the call of Christ to "to shelter the homeless, clothe the naked, and feed the poor." Our team will continue to do everything possible to assist Coloradans in this time of need.
